Conceptually, an Interpreter and a Translator share the same responsibility, which is to take the words of one language and render it in another so that it can be understood by an audience that is unfamiliar with the original language. Because of this, sometimes the terms interpreter and translator are interchanged, although it’s not actually correct to do that.

While the general principle is the same, the actual mechanics and method between the two professions is quite different. The most obvious differentiator is medium. Interpreters work in real time with the spoken word. Someone speaks in their native language and the Interpreter must then, very quickly, paraphrase what was said in some other “target” language. Punctuation Day is a relatively recent day, having been conceived back in 2004 by Jeff Rubin, and it is a day that both celebrates the correct usage of punctuation in written language, and lets people that care (sometimes not so affectionately referred to as “Grammar Nazis”) freely point out and highlight punctuation errors. To many it might not seem like an especially noteworthy subject to devote an entire day to, but the punctuation is critically important to written communication and can have a huge effect on the interpretation of a sentence. Given the fact that translating only refers to written work, the first translations did not originate until humans began to read and write; which was long after they began to communicate with each other verbally. Historians say that humans began writing in two different places independent from each other. The earliest of these was in Mesopotamia, primarily ancient Sumer, around 3200 BCE. This is also where we find our first known translation, the Sumerian epic Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh was translated into Asian languages around 2,000 BCE. The aim of this conference was to teach new tool-mediated work options and encourage translators to use the new Studio 2011 software.

The conference was attended by an array of operators from the translation sector, including translations companies, freelance translators and SDL speakers. This was an opportunity to network, see presentations of new software and get briefings on a host of tool-mediated options. A mid-day meal was served to facilitate discussions.

If someone suggested you take your next vacation in a part of the world where you didn’t understand the language, what would be your reaction? Fear? Intrigue? Panic? Excitement? Desperate queries about how much English the locals spoke?

Personally speaking, this idea has crossed my mind several times. It would make me nervous, sure, but there is also something irresistible about the allure of such a challenge. The closest I ever came was spending two months in Slovakia. So far all the languages I’ve studied have been western European, so there were very few similarities that I could use to help me understand a Slavic language.

New Year’s Eve celebrations are among the oldest and most universally observed. They generally include ceremonies which are expressive of death, invigoration and celebration over the renewal of life. In some countries, parties are thrown on New Year’s Eve which last until the early hours of New Year’s Day.

In the United States it is traditional to watch the ball drop at midnight in New York City’s Times Square, toast it with Champaign and then celebrate in the company of friends and family. Many people make New Year’s resolutions…a list of decisions about how they will live during the coming year. Are you making any New Year’s resolutions?

French and French Canadian

Just as Great Britain and the USA are divided by a common language, so are France and their former colony in the Americas, Canada. In fact the dichotomy here is even bigger than between the two versions of English. While it is widely known that Canada is the second largest area of Francophones after France, what is lesser known is what makes these dialects different. France’s colony in Canada was the first permanent colony in the area around the St. Lawrence river. It was originally known as La Nouvelle France (New France). Today the largest concentration of French speakers in Canada is still in this area, modern-day Quebec. Canada is officially bilingual (English and French), and within the province of Quebec, French is the only official language. 23% of all Canadians are mother tongue French speakers, including 80% of Québecois.

When writing, your intended audience is important. This is especially true when you are writing for an international audience. When you are preparing a document that is to be translated, this is exactly what you are doing. It is good to write with your entire audience in mind. The garbage in, garbage out principle applies to translation, as it does to many things in life, so producing a quality source text will lead to better outcome and fewer translator queries.

Concordances, dictionaries and thesauri are all related tools, each with the purpose of helping the linguist to select the correct term. They are also unique, each providing valuable assistance to the linguist in its own way.

Concordances do not attempt to define words, but instead show the word as used in a variety of sentences. This allows the user to see the different ways a word is used, allowing them to determine if it is also correct for the context of the file they are translating.

Recently a friend, who is a graphics editor, made a comment about the translations of a video he was editing being longer than the original dialog, which was causing obvious problems for captioning purposes. “After all why use two words when five will do instead!” he said. Despite his lack of linguistic knowledge, my friend had hit upon something fundamental to translation. Translated texts, especially translations from English, are often longer than the original. We refer to this as “text expansion”.

Fat Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. As Lent is a season of penance and strict self-discipline, Fat Tuesday in many countries has become a day of celebration before it begins. Here are some of the Fat Tuesday traditions from around the world.

In England and Ireland, the tradition is to eat pancakes. The idea being to use up flour, sugar and butter, whose use is to be restricted during Lent. They call the day Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day. English pancakes are more similar to French crepes than American pancakes, as they are made without a leavening ingredient, and are eaten with fillings, both sweet and savory. Meat and cheese are common savory fillings, and sweet options usually include golden syrup, a fruit coulis, or sugar and lemon juice. There are pancake races where people run while trying to flip a pancake and catch it again in the pan. Running or standing still, it’s something people can enjoy trying their hand at either way on Shrove Tuesday.

Simplified Chinese (or Chinese Simplified)

The WRITTEN text (of Chinese) that is used in mainland China and among people of Chinese origin in Singapore nowadays. This written form mainly evolved and was adopted after the end of civil war and the establishment of today’s P.R.China in 1949, so you may also call it as a relatively “modern form” of Chinese text. The reason and purpose for the Chinese government to develop this simplified writing system is believed to be “simplifying the writing method, easing the effort in writing, and encouraging more people to become literate.”

In business today, few would doubt the importance of the internet to their bottom line. The decreasing price of high-speed bandwidth plus the constantly growing options of mobile internet access has translated to positive growth of internet revenue. According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census bureau, e-commerce accounts for $3.7 billion in shipments, sales or revenues[1]. Online retail spending alone was measured at $129.8 billion in 2009[2].

How can companies get their share of that pie? One of the first things companies will do is to build a website to feature their products and/or services. Next, they have to decide where their target audience is and what language versions they have to offer to generate the biggest impact. The website will be produced in one language and translated from there.

With the ever-increasing importance of translation software in the industry today, it is important to take a look at what these resources are for and how best to manage them. Specifically, let’s look at Terminology Databases. You may also have heard these referred to as glossaries or dictionaries, or by Trados MultiTerm as Term Bases.

The main purpose of terminology management is consistency. Terminology databases are not supposed to be an exhaustive resource on a language. Bilingual dictionaries serve this purpose, and are readily accessible online, as software or in print. Terminology databases, however, should be specific to a client’s company, and contain only terms used in their documentation. To be useful in a terminology database, terms should follow the three Rs.

While the words in this title are good ways to end conversations, a ‘valediction’ is the official way to describe the end part of a letter, just above the signature. In fact, the word ‘valediction’ comes from the Latin ‘vale dicere’ meaning ‘to say farewell’. It is also referred to as a ‘complimentary close’. As with all politeness formulas, there are specific rules about what to use when, and this is particularly true in translation, where the traditions are different in the recipient’s country to those in the writer’s.

Language is a useful tool. It’s the primary way that humans communicate with one another, and is an essential element of relationships, business, education and so much more. So that leads me to wonder how our language came to be the way it is. Sometimes just looking at a word can give clues about its origin and original meaning.

My favorite example is the word “vinegar”. While this doesn’t say much initially, I realized that the French word for “vinegar” is “vinaigre”, a combination of “vin” and “aigre”, literally meaning “sour wine”. English borrowed the word directly from French, but in French, the original meaning of the word is preserved in its component parts. In English, when wine goes bad after being left out too long or stored in the wrong conditions, we say that it’s turned to vinegar. This means that the connection is still there in our minds, even though in English we do not have the linguistic path, as they do in French, which leads us from the one to the other.

Britons are generally friendly and polite, but they are private. The weather is the renowned universal topic of conversation. However, one must never say nice things about the rain. I fell into this trap more than once having previously been living in a desert. It’s not that they like to complain, it’s just that the shared grumble is an easy way to bond.
